Buckle your seat belts for the... theseis

Hello Fellow bloggers and classmates once again,
So, for this blog post I am writing the big and important thesis for my proposal essay.
I hope this is not the final copy as I need to perfect it but this is what i came up with so far.

My research  on whether Christian counseling for all times of history is for everyone or not appears to be obviously accurate in that all counseling should come through the foundation of a biblical understanding.

Now I know its not the best but one has to start somewhere.

Be blessed,

Hello fellow bloggers and students. Sorry I have not been able to blog in a while but better late than ever. So for this week in my proposal essay writing process, my English professor asked the class to write annotated bibliographies on the sources we desire to incorporate in our essays. We are also required to cite these sources and attach them with each bibliography.  So here is my list of five sources.

McMinn, Mark R., et al. "Just What Is Christian Counseling Anyway?." Professional Psychology: Research And Practice 41.5 (2010): 391-397. PsycARTICLES. Web. 1 Apr. 2014.

This article is a credible source for my research because author, Dr. Mark McMinn has valid background and research for what he has written.  Dr. Mark McMinn’s credentials include his undergraduate degree from Lewis and Clark College and a PhD in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University. He then taught at George Fox from 1984 to 1993 to then be part of the integration of psychology and Christianity. Afterwards he returned to George Fox in 2006 and serves as a Professor and Director of Faith Integration in the Graduate Department of Clinical Psychology where is currently working. He is also a psychologist. Date-wise this publication is important to include because it was published in 2010 giving it modern and refreshed. The author’s main goal in this article is to inform about all different kinds of biblical counseling approaches such as pastoral counseling, biblical counseling, and Christian psychology. The publishing source for this article generally targets an audience of professional psychologist or student researchers that are seeking all different kinds of counseling approaches. This audience would be interested in this subject because it provides a variety of counseling approaches and would generally both disagree or disagree with this author’s perspective on the topic because they may agree with one or more approaches and disagree with the others. The author incorporates the following types of evidence: other scholarly journals, books form other scholars, and articles published in American Psychologist. This evidence builds credibility because it stores a lot of information pertaining Christian counseling but is also limited because it does not have any views of a secular perspective. Based on my own opinion, experiences, and research, I agree with this author because he emphasizes that counseling is diverse. I think this article is important to include in my essay because with all the different perspectives of counseling he provides, I am able to have a bigger audience and more data on my subject.

Farnhan, Mark. "Question and Answer." Personal interview. 4 Apr. 2014

Mr. Farnham is a credible source for my research because of his past education. His credentials include a P.H.D. (CAND.) from West Mister Theological Seminary, his ThM in Gorden-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a MD iv in Calvary Baptist Seminary. Mr. Farnham is also a professor here in Lancaster Bible College.  Date-wise it is important to include Mr. Farnham’s input because he is a current theology teacher here and this way, I have a different perspective other than just of a counselor. This interview’s main goal in this article is to respond to the questions I asked such as “is the bible the only thing needed to incorporate in all counseling. The publishing source for this article generally targets an audience that fits the following description: theologians and college students. This audience would be interested in this subject because it would give them an insight to what their professors think and would generally agree with this professor’s perspective on the topic. The author incorporates the following types of evidence: personal experience and past research on the topic. This evidence builds credibility because personal experience allows the audience to actually relate but is also limited because personal experience cannot be proved by anyone but him. Based on my own opinion, experiences, and research, I agree with this professor because he was open to different types of counseling methods. I think this interview is important to include in my essay because it will allow me to incorporate the perspectives of a professor of theology.

Tripp, Paul David. "Do We Really Need Help?" Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands: People in Need of Change Helping People in Need of Change. Phillipsburg, NJ: P&R Pub., 2002. 37-56. Print.

This article is a credible source for my research because of his past experiences and education. The author’s credentials include a master’s degree in Bible and Christian Education in Columbia Bible College which is now called Columbia International University. He also received his Master of Divinity from the Reformed Episcopal Seminary  now called Philadelphia Theological Seminary  and his D. Min in Biblical Counseling at Westminster Theological Seminary. Date-wise this publication is important to include because it was published in 2002 giving it  a modern view. The author’s main goal in this article is to teach leaders and counselors to be good advisors with the help of the Lord . The publishing source for this article generally targets an audience that fits the following description: leaders such as pastors, RAs, camp counselors, and student counselors. This audience would be interested in this subject because Tripp shows them examples and techniques to help them be a better counselor and would generally agree with this author’s perspective on the topic. The author incorporates the following types of evidence: his education and personal insight. This evidence builds credibility because Tripp has past experiences on this topic of counseling but is also limited because not everyone may agree to his sometimes extreme view and close mindedness. Based on my own opinion, experiences, and research, I agree with this author because he gives insight on how to go about being a counselor and when it is necessary to apply it. I think this article is important to include in my essay because share information on to where a person may actually need counseling.

Garzon, Fernando, and Kimberely A. Tilley. "Do Lay Christian Counseling Approaches Work? What We Currently Know." Journal Of Psychology & Christianity 28.2 (2009): 130-140. Academic Search Premier. Web. 4 Apr. 2014.

This article is a credible source for my research because of his many positions and for counseling experiences. The author, Fernando Garzon's credentials include being a professor at Liberty University for counseling and Family Studies, a licensed psychologist, and the Chair of Liberty's Institutional Review board. His clinical experience include outpatient practice, managed care, hospital and church settings. Date-wise this publication is important to include because it was published in 2009 allowing him to have past research done and a modern view on his topic. The author’s main goal in this article is to persuade about the lay or unprofessional approach of counseling being able to function as a form of counseling others. The publishing source for this article generally targets an audience that fits the following description: counselors that do not wish to exceed or start an education, counselor students who are exploring all there possibilities. This audience would be interested in this subject because it provides them different perspectives on something other than accredited counseling and they would generally agree and disagree with this author’s perspective on the topic. The author incorporates the following types of evidence: past experience, professor knowledge, and different perspectives on different types of counseling approaches. This evidence builds credibility because he is able to have experience a variety of counseling settings  but is also limited because he focuses on a certain view which is lay counseling. Based on my own opinion, experiences, and research, I disagree with this author because I believe all counselors should be trained and educated in order to affectively help a client heal through a variety of life situations. I think this article is important to include in my essay in order to have a different perspective on what I believe is true.

Bonthius, Robert H. "What Is Christian Counseling." Journal Of Pastoral Care 13.2 (1959): 69-78. ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials. Web. 4 Apr. 2014.

This article is a credible source for my research because of  the valid credentials and historical expertise. The author’s credentials include, teacher, pastor, writer, community organization medical missionaries in China, Bonthius  earned his B.A. with
honors  in philosophy from  Hope College in Holland, MI.  Called to
the ministry, he attended San Francisco Theological Seminary, receiving
his B.D. and a Graduate Fellowship.  He then went on to Union
Theological Seminary and Columbia University in New York for his M.A.
and Ph. D. degrees.  His doctoral dissertation became his first book,
Christian Paths to Self-Acceptance, published by Columbia and chosen
book-of-the-month by the national Religious Book Club.

In 1948 Bonthius accepted The College of Wooster (OH) call to be
professor  of religion. He taught and counseled
students,  headed a pioneering Carnegie Foundation survey of independent  study  programs for undergraduates  organized the first multi-county mental health center in Ohio chaplain and professor of
religion president of the National Association
of  College and University Chaplains wrote sermons, intercollegiate and professional journal articles in theology, psychology, and ethics. Date-wise this publication is important to include because it gives a historical twist and past knowledge. The author’s main goal in this article is to teach about the differences of Christian and secular counseling. The publishing source for this article generally targets an audience that fits the following description: clients seeking a counselor, students researching this topic, and other scholars. This audience would be interested in this subject because it brings two vastly different kinda of counseling and would generally both agree and disagree with the author's perspective on the topic. The author incorporates the following types of evidence: professor, past counseling experiences, and researched information. This evidence builds credibility because he was able to have a lifetime of vast experiences and research but is also limited because it is historical and not as credible today because of new things discovered and researched. Based on my own opinion, experiences, and research, I disagree with this author because I believe all counseling should be Biblically based as all other approaches ultimately lead to self reliance and sin. I think this article is important to include in my essay because it will allow me to expand my beliefs.

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy.

Inquiry Question Exercise 1.5

Hello Fellow Bloggers and classmates,
So for this exercise, Ballenger in "Curious Researcher" asks us to come up with a proposal for how we plan to research our topics. Here's what I came up with.

My inquiry question is "Is Counseling necessary for everyone?".
Questions that I have concerning my topic.

How was professional counseling developed and why?
Why is counseling necessary?
Why do people go to counseling?
What are the benefits to counseling?
What are the defaults to counseling?
What are naysayers saying about professional counseling?
In what occasions is it almost mandatory to seek counseling?
Do other countries have professional counseling? Why or Why not?
How is counseling perceived?

Ballenger then asks us to bring in past experiences on our topic. This is what I got out of the assignment.

My entire life, my mother lived with us, provided for us and was an amazing person, outside of our house that is.  The major problems she had was that she never asked us how we were doing unless she saw us in pain or if she was actually home. My dad was a great father, but he's a guy so I just thought it was weird to speak to him about my problems. I also saw my parents fight constantly always threatening to leave each other, but the only thing that kept them together was us kids. I always looked for someone to talk to about the simplest things like how my day went, or which boy I liked that month. I thought being a teacher or being a doctor is what I wanted to do because I've been to both places my whole life( I had led poisoning as a child and went to the doctor for any minor cold I had) and I've seen both teacher and doctors in action thinking I can be that person someday. I then realized that I did not want to be cold-hearted by telling families their father died, or having to deal little kids that want nothing less but to be in a place they call jail. So, I figured counseling is the right thing for me. With my past, I could actually have experience and apply it to my counseling. Thanks for listening to my rant fellow bloggers.

Exercise 1.1

Hello Fellow Bloggers,
For this exercise, we were to brainstorm words or phrases that came to our mind when we saw the words places, trends, things, technologies, people, controversies, history, jobs, habits, and hobbies. So I wrote them in a list on a word document and here it is...

· ·         Habits
o   God’s name in vain
o   Leaving cell phone on
o   Tapping
o   Whistling
o   Unkown habits
o   Sleep schedule
·         Jobs
o   Stability
o   Increase of lower waged jobs in z future
o   Jobs for next generation
·         Things
o   Annoying tutor
o   Slacking off
o   Sleeping habits
o   College students
·         Controversies
o   Marriages
o   Divorce
o   Violence in other countries
o   Sex trafficking
o   Decisions on marriage in other countries
o   Is counseling for everyone?
·         Trends
o   Facebook
o   Twitter
o   Insta
o   Snapchat
o   Spotify
o   Clothing
o   Jewelry
o   Modesty
·         Places
o   Dictatorship
o   Poverty
o   Children
o   Drug dealing
o   Criminals
o   Cruses
o   Beautiful views
o   Why is America better than others?
o   Why does everyone want to be in America
o   Different cultures
o   Different religions

We are then to find one item in the list we have generated that we see has potiential to write about and circle(underline, highlight, and bold in my case). With the item we have chosen , we are to generate  as many questions as possible on the topic. I again am going to copy and paste my list from a word document as I find this option easier.

Is Counseling for Everyone?
·         Is there a requirement needed to get counseled?
·         What cases are required to get counseling?
·         Is there a line between not enough, just, or too much counseling for a client?
·         Do we have to pay to get professional counseling?
·         In what kinds of life altering times is it necessary to seek counseling?
·         When is it okay to have an intervention for a person saying they will never need anyone’s help?
·         Is counseling seen as the thing to do in other countries?
·         What does professional or something similar to it look like in other cultures?
·         Why do we seek counseling?
·         Should we fully rely on God for our counseling needs?
·         Are all counselors only seeing clients as numbers?
·         Should all counselors be Christian or not Christian?
·         Should all counselors have the same take on counseling?
·         Should counseling be taken seriously?
       What is counseling

After thinking about my topic for a while, this is what i came up with? I did not think I thought about that topic as much as I did until I wrote all those questions. Let the true thinking begin.

Exercise 1

Hello Fellow bloggers and classmates,
On this first exercise, Bruce Ballenger, the author of " Curious Researcher" asks us to think of a topic and write on our beliefs on it. We are to write 3 minutes non stop no matter how messy it gets, so here I go.
I chose the topic of my beliefs on marriage and how it may be( I've never been on a relationship so bare with me.)
Marriage is probably the hardest decision you will take.  Marriage is when 2 people find love, compatibility, and similarites together to the point where they think they can spend the rest of their lives together. Some deal breakers is whether they want to have kids, adopt, live in the city, or in the country, or other life changing decisions....

Well that's all I could think of in three minute. I believe I psyched myself out because I timed myself and I felt like I needed to know everything on my topic without using past experiences.

Step two in this exercise, Ballenger asks us to pick from a ray of topics and do the same type of fast writing as I did above. Only this time, we are allowed to use our own experiences instead of thinking we are to write an essay for our English class.

The topic I chose was " When two experts disagree, one of them has to be wrong"

I will have to disagree with this because both statements can be either true or false. Based on the research or evidence both experts bring to the table will determine the correct one. Both experts can also be both right based on someone else's perspective on what the expert has to say. They can also be wrong now depending on what evidence they have and later be right based on this constantly updating world. Once as a kid, I got in trouble because I cleaned my room before I went to school but it was dirty when I got there. It was a lie until I found my self in the same situation, but this time I found my sneaky dog messing up my room...

That was all I could do in three minutes. I felt more confident in this one because I was allowed to embed my past experiences in it and i was a bit more passionate about this topic.

Be Blessed,
Jess Guzman

Th beginning of a five week scavenger hunt

Hello Fellow bloggers and fellow classmates!
So for my English class, we are writing an essay about a topic that we get to choose that my college professor chose to call the proposal essay. The purpose of this proposal essay is to persuade our audience for the topic we've picked on what we think on the topic. Interestingly enough, instead of having a week or two on an essay as I am accustomed to in high school, we are to expand our research and thinking for a span of five weeks. The book we are assigned to read gives us guidelines on what we should do through the weeks, so my professor has asked us to blog about it. So,  in these next couple of weeks I will be blogging about my thought process and the actual assignments given to us in the book "Curious Researchers" by Bruce Ballenger. I hope you enjoy reading of the thought processes of a freshman in Lancaster Bible College.
